The bike industry has invented a lot of “standards.” These guides explain — in plain English — what each one is, why it exists, and how to figure out which one your bike has, so you can record your parts accurately and know what fits.

Crankset

The crankset is the set of crank arms, spindle, and chainrings that turns your pedaling into forward motion. Cranksets attach to the frame through the bottom bracket, and the shape and diameter of the spindle interface decides which bottom bracket fits. Chainring mounting pattern, crank arm length, and chainline decide which chainrings, chains, and frames a crankset works with.

Bottom Bracket

The bottom bracket is the bearing assembly that lets your cranks spin in the frame. It must match two things at once: the frame's bottom bracket shell (width, diameter, threaded or smooth) and the crankset's spindle (the axle passing through it). Because many competing standards exist, identifying yours correctly is the key to buying a replacement that fits.

Cassette

The cassette is the stack of sprockets (toothed cogs) on your rear wheel that the chain climbs up and down as you shift. Cassettes come in different speed counts (7 to 13), tooth ranges (like 11-34 or 10-52), and mounting interfaces called freehub body standards. Knowing all three tells you which chains, wheels, and derailleurs will work with your bike.

Chain

Every modern bicycle chain shares the same half-inch spacing between pins, but chains get narrower as drivetrains add more gears. To pick the right chain you mainly need to know how many gears (speeds) your rear cassette has and, for a few modern systems, which brand family the chain belongs to.

Rear Derailleur

The rear derailleur is the spring-loaded arm that moves your chain across the rear cassette when you shift. To work correctly it has to match your shifter's cable pull, your cassette's speed count and biggest cog, your chainring setup, and your frame's mounting standard. Front Derailleur

The front derailleur is the mechanism that pushes your chain between the front chainrings on bikes with two or three rings up front. Fit depends on how it mounts to the frame (clamp, braze-on tab, or direct mount), which direction the shift cable arrives from, how many gears your drivetrain has, and which brand and generation of shifter is pulling the cable. Most modern mountain bikes no longer have one at all, but they remain standard on road, gravel, commuter, and many e-bikes.

Shifters

Shifters are the controls on your handlebar (or frame, on older bikes) that move the derailleurs and change gears. Getting the right one is about more than click count: the shifter's brand, speed count, cable pull, and mounting style all have to match the rest of your drivetrain. Handlebar

The handlebar is what you steer and hold onto, and it has two diameters that must match other parts exactly: the clamp diameter at its center, where the stem grips it, and the control-area diameter at its ends, where your grips, brake levers, and shifters clamp on. Everything else about a bar — width, rise, sweep, drop, flare — is a fit choice that changes how the bike handles and feels, not whether parts bolt on. Stem

The stem connects your handlebar to the fork's steerer tube. It has to match two things: the steerer it clamps (or inserts into) at one end, and the handlebar it clamps at the other. Get either wrong and the stem won't hold safely. Length and angle, by contrast, are fit choices that set your reach and bar height. Headset

The headset is the pair of bearings that lets your fork rotate inside the frame's head tube so you can steer. Headsets come in three basic fit types — external cup, zero stack, and integrated — and are sized to match your head tube's inside diameter and your fork's steerer tube. Nearly every modern headset is described by a S.H.I.S. code (Standardized Headset Identification System), like ZS44/28.6 | ZS56/40, which tells you everything needed to find a compatible replacement.

Grips

Grips are the rubber, foam, or silicone sleeves you hold on a flat handlebar; on drop bars the same job is done by wrapped bar tape. Grip fit is one of the simplest areas of a bike because nearly every flat bar uses the same 22.2 mm diameter where the grip sits. What varies is how the grip attaches (lock-on vs slide-on), its length, its outer thickness, and its shape.

Saddle

The saddle (seat) is the part you sit on, and it attaches to your seatpost by a pair of metal or carbon rails running underneath it. Rail type and size determine which seatposts can clamp your saddle, while width and length determine how well it fits your body. Nearly every modern saddle uses either round 7 mm rails or oval carbon rails, but the difference matters more than it looks.

Seatpost

The seatpost is the tube that connects your saddle to your frame, sliding into the frame's seat tube. Its diameter must match the inside of your seat tube almost exactly, so getting the size right matters more than with almost any other part. Modern posts split into two families: rigid posts (fixed height) and dropper posts, which let you raise and lower the saddle on the fly with a handlebar remote.
